MFA The Ohio State University
Jerry Cutler, Professor Emeritus, teaches the Summer Studio course, ‘On the edge; visual tension and the dynamics of drawing’. The course develops theories and strategic explorations in advanced visual relationships. During this course, students explore advanced ideas in 2-dimensional pictorial dynamics and develop images that use those ideas in sketchbook studies, practice drawings, and presentation pieces.
Jerry Cutler was raised on a farm in rural Wisconsin, and always had a talent for drawing. At age14 he announced that he would be an art teacher, though he had never met one himself. Cutler took correspondence courses through the University of Wisconsin Extension before his high school hired its first art teacher in his junior year.
Cutler took degrees in Fine Art and Art Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and later an MA in Painting at St. Cloud University. Cutler taught at Platteville (Wis.) Public Schools as an elementary art specialist, and began showing his paintings in national juried exhibitions. In 1980, he attended the Ohio State University earning an MFA degree in Drawing and Painting.
In 1981, Professor Cutler was hired at the University of Florida and has taught with the University for over twenty years. In 2010, Cutler retired as Professor Emeritus. During his time at UF, Cutler chaired 36 MFA committees in Drawing and Painting and served as committee member for over 40 graduate students in art and art related fields. He regularly taught two or more undergraduate courses per term, concentrating on figure drawing, figure painting, color theory, advanced composition, and senior painting. He was heavily involved in school, college and university service and capped his career working to advance shared governance.
Spending decades as a painter of the human figure, Cutler invented his landscape idiom in 1989 and has since been exclusively involved in that genre. Over the years Cutler’s paintings have been exhibited in hundreds of group shows and many scores of solo shows. His paintings are held in private and public collections and his work is placed in numerous venues with the Florida’s Art in State Buildings Program. Cutler paints regularly in his studio at his home in Gainesville where he lives with his wife Elizabeth and their two cats.
